چکیده
Abstract We discuss general structural features of the Banning and Mission Creek strands (BF MCF) southern San Andreas fault (SSAF) in Coachella Valley, based on ambient noise earthquake wavefields recorded by a seismic array with >300 nodes. Earthquake P arrivals show rapid changes waveform characteristics over 20–40 m zones that coincide surface BF MCF. These variations indicate MCF are high-impedance contrast interfaces—an observation supported presence reflections. Another prominent but more diffuse change SSAF structure is found ∼1 km northeast BF. This feature has average-to-low arrival times (P S) levels (at <30 Hz), likely represents relatively fast velocity block sandwiched between broader zones. The maximal delays ∼0.1 s S ∼0.25 s) highest (>2 median) consistently observed southwest BF—a combined effect Valley sediments rock damage side. Immediately MCF, large minus suggest broad high VP/VS zone associated asymmetric across SSAF. overview shows as mature distinctly different Future analyses will further clarify these other greater detail.

Weakness of the San Andreas Fault revealed by samples from the active fault zone
Understanding the strength and slip behaviour of tectonic faults is a central problem in earthquake physics and seismichazard assessment1–8. Many major faults, including the San Andreas Fault, are weak compared with the surrounding rock, but the cause of this weakness is debated1. Previous measurements of the frictional strength of San Andreas Fault rocks are too high to explain the observed we...
متن کاملLocalized and distributed creep along the southern San Andreas Fault
We investigate the spatial pattern of surface creep and off-fault deformation along the southern segment of the San Andreas Fault using a combination of multiple interferometric synthetic aperture radar viewing geometries and survey-mode GPS occupations of a dense array crossing the fault. Radar observations from Envisat during the period 2003–2010 were used to separate the pattern of horizonta...
متن کاملLow-velocity damaged structure of the San Andreas Fault at Parkfield from fault zone trapped waves
[1] We used dense linear seismic arrays across and along the San Andreas Fault (SAF) at Parkfield, California to record fault zone trapped waves generated by explosions and microearthquakes in 2002. Prominent trapped waves appeared at stations close to the SAF main fault trace while some energy was trapped in the north strand at the array site. Observations and 3-D finitedifference simulations ...
متن کاملFault creep along the southern San Andreas from interferometric synthetic aperture radar, permanent scatterers, and stacking
[1] Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) provides a practical means of mapping creep along major strike-slip faults. The small amplitude of the creep signal (<10 mm/yr), combined with its short wavelength, makes it difficult to extract from long time span interferograms, especially in agricultural or heavily vegetated areas. We utilize two approaches to extract the fault creep signa...
متن کاملFine-scale structure of the San Andreas fault zone and location of the SAFOD target earthquakes
[1] We present results from the tomographic analysis of seismic data from the Parkfield area using three different inversion codes. The models provide a consistent view of the complex velocity structure in the vicinity of the San Andreas, including a sharp velocity contrast across the fault. We use the inversion results to assess our confidence in the absolute location accuracy of a potential t...
